Gov. Charlie Crist, locked in an increasingly bitter GOP primary for the U.S. Senate, will go before Florida lawmakers for the last time on Tuesday night.
Crist has used his annual State of the State speech in the last three years to recite his past accomplishments and lay out his annual legislative agenda.
But this could be the biggest speech that Crist has ever given in his entire political career. Crist, who has been sliding in the polls against former House Speaker Marco Rubio, has an unfettered chance to starkly show the differences between his pragmatic political philosophy and that of his rival.
Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, said what Crist needs to do is tell Floridians in clear and convincing terms why he believes what he believes – including, yes, why he supported the federal stimulus.
“It’s a real opportunity for him,’’ said Gelber. “It’s a chance to educate the chattering class. I think it’s a real chance for him to explain it in adult terms where the state of the state is.’’
